A Personal Statement

Greetings, and welcome to our parish website! I hope that you are enjoying your tour of St. Bartholomew's. From the time of the Jamestown Colony in 1608, the Anglican Church was the faith of many of the founding fathers of our nation, and today it is being rediscovered by many Americans as their home Church. You will find us to be part of a living tradition that exists to worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness and to serve our fellowman.

What does it mean to be a Christian in the Anglican way? Briefly, it could be summed up in the opening of our Worship Service, where the following is read by the priest: "Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ saith. Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it; Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets."

Divine Love was made Incarnate in Jesus Christ, who is the Word or Son of God. This Love is also made present in the life of the Church today, as she worships and serves Jesus in time and space. For more on the Anglican Way, see below*.

Inquirers are welcome to attend our worship services and other activities at St. Bartholomew's. The center of Anglican piety is the Lord's Supper, usually known to us as Holy Communion. Those who have been Baptized and Confirmed are welcome to participate fully in this Service, and others are welcome to observe. Holy Communion in our parish is offered at 10:00 a.m. on Sundays and other Festivals. Daily prayer offices of Matins and Evensong are read at 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. Matins (Morning Prayer) & Evensong (Evening Prayer) are short Services which consist of reading and praying the words of Holy Scripture in a structured and meditative way. This system, which is based on the monastic cycle of worship, is an excellent way of marking the passage of time and of sanctifying it to the Lord.

We welcome families in our parish, and we have something to offer people of every age. Adults are welcome to take advantage of Scripture Study and Educational Forums, as well as opportunities for service. Young people will find that we offer Church School programs from Nursery through Middle School, and opportunities for Acolytes, Junior Altar Guild and Choir.

If you are new to the Church, or would like more information on what it means to be a Christian, you are welcome to contact us.

Come Home And See Us: you will find that we are a warm and welcoming parish!
Joy in Christ,
Daniel+

*More in-depth: the Anglican Church continues on in the catholic (i.e. universal Christian) faith which has been believed everywhere, at all times and by all the faithful. The Anglican way has historically attempted to steer clear of additions to, and subtractions from, this faith. Holy Scripture is the ground of truth for Anglicans, and although the Church has authority in controversies of the faith, she is ultimately subject to Holy Scripture, the authoritative letter from the Ancient Church to us today. We typically read and study Scripture through the Authorized Version ("King James Version"), the greatest Bible offered by the Anglican Church to Christendom, which continues to be a part of our living heritage. The Anglican Way is given practical shape by the historic Anglican formularies: the Book of Common Prayer (used for worship), the 39 Articles of Religion (for doctrine) and the Ordinal (for ordering the ministry). We are blessed with centuries of hymnody from the world over in our musical companion, The Hymnal, 1940.

A Personal Statement

There is never an inopportune time to meet with the Lord. Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not. (Jer. 33:3) Why? For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will harken unto you. And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart. (Jer. 29:11-13)

Indeed, God does love us and has a plan for our lives. He will redeem us and restore us to himself.
